FOUND IN TRANSLATION: paradise

This workshop is designed to focus on finding inspiration—in an exciting and investigation-worthy environment—deconstructing it, and translating its elements into your ceramic work through materials, technique, form, and surface. Inspiration comes in many forms—it may be direct or indirect, known precisely or perhaps only felt.

We will explore paradise, gather inspiration and work toward making formal decisions (deciding which materials and ways of working best represent our ideas) and use elements of design to generate dynamic forms and surfaces.

Wherever (and however) you find it, this workshop will give you the creative tools to pursue your inspirations thoroughly and confidently, no matter where you find yourself next.

WHERE?

Workshop will be held at Pottery in Paradise (click for map) in Coral Bay, on the island of St. John, in the US Virgin Islands.

HOW MUCH?

Full 10 day workshop (January 10-19) is $975

3-day weekend option (January 10,11,12) is $350

Some clay included in workshop price; glazing and firing also included. If you choose to fire and keep work made during the workshop, keep shipping and airline fees in mind.

Please note that we will be using the clay bodies and glaze/firing options available to us through the pottery: high fire gas/reduction and low fire electric.

WHO’S Birdie Boone?

My ceramic practice finds me translating something like ‘elusive moments of remembered experiences’ through ceramic materials and processes. I love how materials inherently carry meaning, just waiting for the metaphor to arise. And if materials carry meaning, then why not the process by which we make things or the type of kiln we use to fire those things? Or the form (object) we choose to make? For me, it’s an instinctive way of working; I absorb my environment and experiences and what’s of concern about them is revealed, in terms of all these aspects, through my work. I don’t try to name it or tame it, and I am always excited to see how my work changes when my environment changes. That’s why I am so excited for this opportunity to teach in such a beautiful place. An abundance of inspiration!
