INTERFACE: harmonious form and surface
This workshop will focus on bringing form and surface into balance. We’ll look at and talk about pots with surface in mind and discuss different ways to imbue pots with a sense of atmosphere in the mid-range electric kiln process. I’ll cover the ins, outs, ups and downs of using bisque slip as an interface between clay and glaze--at cone six it’s a bit tricky. We’ll also take a close look at visual and tactile qualities of different types of glaze and how they can improve interfacing for the potential to elevate your pots through unified form and surface.
ALL (WELL, A LOT) ABOUT BISQUE SLIP
I’ll cover what I’ve learned about using bisque slip (also known as crackle slip or bisque crackle slip) over the last decade or so, specifically about its use at cone 6. In the early days, I ran into issues of application. In the years that followed, I learned to work around those issues and a lot more. Bisque slip holds a lot of potential, but it can be temperamental if you let it. I’ll share what I’ve learned so far in terms of the slip recipe, mixing a batch, application, and firing, and will show you various fired examples and discuss those results. I encourage you to come with questions and even samples of your own use of bisque slip at cone 6, successful or not.

I’ll also introduce you to the way I think about the glazed surface through a brief discussion of the properties of light transmission, texture, and colorant receptivity, all of which variables control a surface’s atmospheric tendencies and add nuance to the work as a whole. Feel free to bring glaze questions or samples.
